The Adventure of Purpose

Episode 31: Habakkuk — Faith in the Midst of the Storm

Episode Summary

Habakkuk is a unique prophetic book in the Bible: instead of speaking to the people on God's behalf, the prophet dialogues directly with God, questioning suffering, injustice, and the apparent divine silence. Through this intimate debate, God reveals that His ways surpass human understanding and that "the just shall live by his faith." It is a book that speaks deeply to the heart of anyone who has ever cried out: why, Lord?

Episode Notes

Habakkuk probably prophesied between 612 and 589 BC, during the rise of the Babylonian Empire as an instrument of judgment on Judah. He is one of the few prophets who dares to openly question God's methods, making him an extraordinarily honest and human voice. The book concludes with one of the most beautiful hymns of faith in the whole Bible, in chapter 3, written as a liturgical psalm. A curious fact: the phrase "the just shall live by his faith" (Habakkuk 2:4) is quoted three times in the New Testament — in Romans, Galatians, and Hebrews — making it one of the most influential Old Testament quotations in Christian theology.
