The Adventure of Purpose

Episode 37: Nehemiah — The Builder of Walls and Hopes

Episode Summary

Nehemiah tells the story of a cupbearer to the Persian king who, moved by a deep love for his people, returns to Jerusalem to rebuild its ruined walls. Amid the opposition of enemies and internal disorganization, Nehemiah leads with faith, determination, and prayer a restoration that goes far beyond stone walls. It is a story of leadership, perseverance, and the spiritual renewal of an entire nation.

Episode Notes

Nehemiah lived around the 5th century BC, during the Persian period, and his book is historically placed roughly between 445 and 420 BC. Tradition holds that Nehemiah himself wrote much of the book, since extensive sections are written in the first person, giving it the tone of personal memoirs. The book is closely related to Ezra, and in many ancient traditions the two formed a single text. A curious fact: Nehemiah managed to rebuild Jerusalem's 4 kilometers of walls in just 52 days, a feat that even his adversaries recognized as the work of God.
