The Adventure of Purpose

Episode 39: Haggai — The Call to Rebuild

Episode Summary

Haggai is a post-exilic prophet who calls the people of Israel to resume the construction of the temple in Jerusalem, abandoned for years due to apathy and hardship. Through four direct and urgent messages, God challenges His people to prioritize His house above their personal comfort. The book ends with a powerful promise of glory and blessing for those who obey.

Episode Notes

Haggai prophesied in 520 BC, during the reign of the Persian king Darius I, being one of the first prophets to minister after the return from the Babylonian exile. He is considered the author of the book that bears his name, and his ministry lasted barely four months, making it one of the shortest prophetic books in historical duration. His messages were so effective that, according to Ezra 5:1-2, the people resumed construction of the temple immediately. A curious fact is that Haggai is one of only two prophets mentioned by name in the book of Ezra, alongside Zechariah, confirming the real historical impact of his ministry.
